Privacy Policy
The short version
- Your photos, videos and PDFs are compressed on your device. They are never uploaded to us or anyone else.
- No account, no sign up, no ads and no tracking across other apps or websites.
- Your compression history syncs only through your own private iCloud, which we cannot read.
- The app sends anonymous usage numbers and crash reports, such as file sizes before and after, so we can make it better. Never the files themselves.
- Purchases go through Apple. We never see your card or your Apple Account details.
- We do not sell your information. Ever.
This policy explains what information the Compressor app ("Image Video PDF Compressor", "the app") and this website handle, why, and the choices you have. Compressor is made by The Black Hole Company ("we", "us"). If you have a question, write to hello@theblackholecompany.com.
1. Your photos, videos and PDFs
When you pick a file, the app reads it from your photo library or the Files app and compresses it on your iPhone or iPad. The original and the compressed copy stay on your device and are saved only where you choose: your photo library, the Files app, or a share sheet. The app asks iOS for access to your photo library so it can read and save photos. You can limit or change that access at any time in the iOS Settings app.
We never receive your files, their contents, their names, their location data or any other metadata inside them.
2. Your history, synced through your iCloud
The app keeps a history of what you compressed: a small thumbnail, the sizes before and after, the format, dimensions and date. If you are signed in to iCloud, this history is stored in your private iCloud database so it follows you to your other devices. It lives in your own iCloud account under Apple's privacy policy. We cannot read it. You can delete items or clear your history in the app, or turn iCloud off for Compressor in the iOS Settings app.
3. Anonymous usage and crash reports
To learn which features people use, where they get stuck and what crashes, the app uses PostHog, an analytics service.
What is sent
- App events, for example a compression started, finished or failed, a file saved or shared, and which screens were opened.
- Numbers about each compression: the kind of file, sizes before and after, percentage saved, format, quality setting, number of files or pages, video resolution and codec, and how long it took.
- Your Pro status and which plan you bought (the product, not your payment details), and how many compressions you have used.
- Crash reports and error details, with the app version, iOS version and device type.
- A random identifier created by the app, so events from the same device can be grouped. It is not linked to your name, email or Apple Account, and it resets if you delete the app.
- Your approximate country, which PostHog works out from your internet address. We do not keep your full internet address or your precise location.
What is never sent
- Your photos, videos or PDFs, their file names, or anything inside them.
- Your name, email address, phone number or Apple Account.
- Recordings of your screen, your taps or keystrokes.
- Your device's advertising identifier. Compressor does not track you, so it never asks for tracking permission.
This information is processed on PostHog's servers in the United States. We use it only to improve and fix Compressor, and we keep it for up to 24 months.
4. Purchases
Compressor Pro is bought through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment under Apple's privacy policy. We never receive your card number, billing address or Apple Account details.
To deliver and restore what you buy, the app uses RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives the App Store receipt for your purchases, a random app user identifier, your device type, iOS version and the country or region of your App Store. It does not receive your name or contact details.
5. When you contact us
If you send feedback or a problem report from the app, the email includes what you write and may include the app version, device model and iOS version, so we can reproduce a bug. We receive your email address because you wrote to us. We use it only to reply, and delete support emails once the conversation is finished, within 24 months at the latest.
6. This website
This website has no cookies, no analytics and no advertising. It is hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard server logs (such as internet address and browser type) for security and reliability. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives your internet address when it sends the font.
7. Who we share information with
- PostHog, for usage numbers and crash reports: the anonymous data in section 3.
- RevenueCat, for delivering and restoring purchases: App Store receipts and a random user identifier.
- Apple, for payments and iCloud sync, under Apple's own privacy policy.
- Vercel, for hosting this website: standard server logs.
We do not sell or rent your information, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not use it to build profiles of you. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
8. Legal bases (EU, UK and similar laws)
- Usage and crash reports: our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and improving it.
- Purchases: performing our contract with you, which is delivering what you bought.
- Support emails: our legitimate interest in answering you.
9. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or move your information, to object to or limit how it is used, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Because analytics data is anonymous and not linked to your identity, we usually cannot find it from your name or email. Deleting the app removes everything on your device and resets the random identifier. To exercise any right, or to object to usage reports, write to hello@theblackholecompany.com. We answer within 30 days.
10. Children
Compressor has no chat, no accounts and no ads. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, for example by email, write to us and we will delete it.
11. Security
Data sent by the app travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). We keep what we collect to the minimum the app needs, and our service providers protect it under their own security programs.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change how Compressor handles information, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will also tell you in the app before it takes effect.
